Energy Procurement

How does our energy procurement process benefit businesses?
Our expert advice, comprehensive energy procurement and contract tendering assistance will help your business control energy costs. Alongside this, our holistic approach to energy management ensures that your sustainability, energy efficiency, generation and storage objectives are being considered.
What is Energy Procurement?
Procuring or purchasing energy contracts is complex, especially for Commercial/Industrial (C&I) energy customers and multi-site businesses with a portfolio of C&I and/or Small Business Enterprise (SME) electricity and natural gas accounts.
At Leading Edge, we take a bottom-up approach to identifying the most cost-effective energy contract for your business. This involves looking beyond just the prevailing energy rates. We determine the appropriate retail energy market (SME or C&I) and the optimal network tariff structure and consider the energy retailers who are best positioned to support your business’s current and future needs. We then complete a comprehensive tender and offer comparison process to assist your business by sourcing and comparing available market rates.
How do we do it?
Our goal is to save you time while lowering the cost of electricity and natural gas for your business. Our ground-up approach aims to ensure each site is not just paying lower energy rates but is also on the most cost-effective account and tariff structure. This process relies on our extensive understanding of retail energy markets, network tariffs, energy products and contract types, and wholesale electricity and gas market movements.
Our process is stepped out below:

1. Need Analysis
What are the specific requirements and preferences of your business?
We understand that not all businesses have the same objectives, and this applies to their energy procurement too. We’ll meet with you via teleconference to gain a clear understanding of your business requirements and priorities. We then share our insights with respect to current wholesale market trends and products available in the market which may suit your business. We also respond to your questions so you can be clear about our approach and next steps.
2. Market Assessment
Is your site more suited to the SME (Small) or Commercial & Industrial (Large) Market?
We analyse the annual energy profile of each site to assess whether your business can potentially secure lower energy costs by transitioning to a different energy market (SME or Commercial & Industrial).
3. Network Tariff Assessment
Is there an opportunity to achieve immediate cost savings by changing the network tariff?
We check if your business is within the appropriate network tariff. Being placed in the correct network tariff may lead to savings for your business.
4. Review of Available Energy Product & Contract Structure
What retail energy products are available to my business?
Our consultants will assess the product options that are potentially available to your business and will walk you through the options. Energy contracts no longer need to be a one-size-fits all proposition with various products that take advantage of emerging technologies now available.
Fixed Energy Contract
When we assist you with energy procurement, you have access to highly-competitive fixed electricity and gas rates, ensuring security, peace of mind, and a cheaper, reliable energy supply.
Progressive Energy Purchasing
This allows you to reduce unnecessary exposure by purchasing electricity and natural gas in increments instead of all at once.
Spot Market Contracts
While risky, spot market contracts are suitable for C&I businesses as they allow greater flexibility and real-time purchasing advice from our consultants.
Renewable PPAs
Offsite or onsite Power Purchase Agreements allow clients to have a secure supply of renewable energy with a fixed price for the contracting period. These shield businesses from price volatility and reduce carbon footprint.
5. Competitive Tender Process
How do I get as many retailers as to compete for my business?
We prepare a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) package based on our analysis of your forecast business energy usage profile and any additional requirements. We send this to our panel of up to fifteen energy retailers. We aim to take advantage of market timing while always seeking to extract the lower rates available from our retailer panel.
6. Like-for-Like Reporting and Analysis
With so many offers and short validity periods, how do I effectively collate and compare my options on a like-for-like basis?
We analyse all retailer offers across all available terms on a like-for-like basis, comparing energy charges, network charges, the market, metering, and charges.
In addition to providing a summary report with all offers ranked by forecast cost, we also provide a detailed whole-of-bill comparison, so you have the information necessary to make a confident business decision about your next energy supply contract.
7. Contract Execution & Transfer Management
Contract validity periods can be very short. How can Leading Edge help?
Commercial & Industrial offer validity terms can be as short as 1 day and no longer than 5 days.
We appreciate the challenges that this can create so we streamline the contract execution process by loading the relevant documents and agreements into a digital signing application so the authorised representative in your business can accept and sign the agreements seamlessly from virtually anywhere.
We will then monitor the contract acceptance and transfer process to ensure that your site/s is transferred to your chosen retailer and contracted rates.
8. Monthly Bill Validation
How can I be sure that my business is being invoiced correctly?
Commercial & Industrial energy bills are complex; it is not always clear if your business is being charged in accordance with the contracted rates. We will review the first invoice of the contract to verify that your business is being charged correctly and email you a report based on our review.
We will then continue to verify each monthly invoice for the entire retail agreement. As part of this process, we will compile and email you a detailed 13-month energy cost and usage report alongside a copy of the latest monthly invoice. This report is designed to help you understand how your business is using energy and being billed for it.
