Since our last wholesale rate update on June 5, electricity rates have registered a drop in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria. Prices are still up by between 87 and 188% when compared to 24 months ago. The drop in prices was highest in Queensland at 13% and the lowest was in Victoria at 6%. The average drop in prices across the board was 10% over the month of May.

The price drops come after Chief Government Scientist Alan Finkel’s electricity market review recommended the introduction of a Clean Energy Target. Political bickering continues in the coalition party room as former Prime Minister Tony Abbott continues to push for more coal fired plants. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has since stated that the government could finance a new High Efficiency Low Emissions coal plant. A raft of new solar generation and battery storage projects were also announced in June.
